In fashion, the turban appeared at the end of the 18th century, and had resurgences in several decades of the 20th century. In particular, it became popular in the 1910s as a symbol of oriental glamour, and in the 1940s when it was popularized by Hollywood stars. In the late 1960s and 1970s, it was pioneered by designers such as Biba in the UK and Halston in the US and worn by royal ladies and hippie girls alike.
