Áo dài is a traditional dress of Vietnam, which is worn by both men and women on formal and special occasions. It consists of a long, fitted tunic with two flaps, one in the front and one in the back, that reach the ankles. The tunic is worn over trousers, usually of the same color or fabric. The áo dài has a history of over 300 years, and has evolved from the five-part dress (áo ngũ thân) that was worn by the royal court of the Nguyễn dynasty. The modern áo dài was designed by artist Le Mur Nguyễn Cát Tường in the 1930s, who simplified the dress and made it more flattering to the body. The áo dài is a symbol of beauty, elegance, and culture in Vietnam. ⁵⁶⁷⁸⁹
