The Tasmanian tiger (Thylacinus cynocephalus), also known as the thylacine, was a carnivorous marsupial native to Australia and Tasmania. It resembled a medium-sized dog with distinctive dark stripes across its back, which earned it the nickname "tiger." As the largest known carnivorous marsupial of modern times, it had a pouch and was primarily nocturnal. Due to hunting and habitat loss, the last known individual died in captivity in 1936.
